Some history...
The mother of Thomas Arthur Burgess (Hannah Elizabeth) was a distant relative of
my wife. ***
1871 census shows her as a barmaid at the
Crown, St Giles. A Thomas
Burgess is listed her according to petty sessions records in 1873 and 1874. This
matches a marriage between Hannah Elizabeth Haydon and Thomas Burgess in St
Pancras in 1872. He is a Licensed Victualler, son of Richard Burgess, builder,
and she is daughter of James Hydon, baker. Both list their address as Leighton
road.
1881 census has her with husband Thomas (publican) and son Thomas
Arthur at 29 Inkerman Road (presumed a pub but not identified)
1891 census has them at 62 Camplin Street, Deptford (presumably NOT a pub);
Thomas is a county council clerk and she has no occupation. Thomas Arthur is
only 12 years old
I have a probable death for husband Thomas in quarter 3 of 1899 at Greenwich. So
presumably widow Hannah Elizabeth needs to find an income...
The Essex Newsman of 13 Jan 1900 reported that “The licence of the
George Inn was transferred to Mrs
Hannah Elizabeth Burgess (CHELMSFORD PETTY SESSIONS)” ***
And by 1908 this family is at the Marsh Gate. ***
