Evening Star 16 October 1909
Walter Farthing summoned for being disorderly and refusing to quit the Appletree Beerhouse, West Bergholt, on October 4th.
The landlord. Albert Peachey stated that on the day the defendant and two companions entered the Appletree and were served with three quarts of beer. When it came to the question of who should pay for the third quart, there was a dispute between defendant and one of his companions.
Defendant began to use bad language, whereupon witness ordered him to leave. This he refused to do, and struck witness in the paw, Thomas Hayward, who was in the house at the time corroborated.
Defendant denied the charge, and also denied striking the landlord. He admitted he had been convicted twice previously of similar conduct. Edgar Ridout and Horace Alston, both of West Bergholt, defendants companions on the evening gave evidence, the former flatly denying that Farthing was disorderly or refused to quit.
A fine of 10 shillings with 4 shillings costs was imposed.
