In 1780, the Saluatation and Cat, Newgate street is noted as number 36 (previously at number 46 in 1769) in the list of Masonic lodges. It has a costitution date of 11th January 1731. There are also noted individuals listed as early as 1735 at the Saluatation and Cat Tavern, in Newgate street.

Existed from at least 1733. The name of this pub has varied over the years, including :
Salutation & Cat (1807, 1808, 1846, after 1897), Salutation Tavern (1826, 1839, after 1846), Salutation Coffee House (1832-1834) and Duval’s Restaurant (1895 and 1897). It is now demolished. ** The 1841 refers to address as in Rose Street; as do some of the later directory entries.
