Pembroke Castle, 46 Bingfield Street, Islington

Islington index

Named, we suspect, in honour of the 1863 Union-Castle Mail Steamship Company vessel, the pub in turn now has a street named after it. Demolished in 1972 or 73 the Crumbles Castle children’s play area is now on the site.  **

Harry Burrows was our great grandfather. He was the son of Mary and Henry Burrows, of The Bricklayer's Arms, Strutton Ground. He married his cousin, Emma Ann Verdin Turnham; the daughter of Robert Turnham who headed the family hotel chain from The Orange Tree, Euston Road. They managed the Pembroke Castle, Islington, both recorded there in 1891. In 1901 it was kept by Emma’s cousin Ledger D. Turnham (son of William) and his American wife M.E. Turnham, then in 1910 Harry is there again.  **
