My x 3 great grandfather, Charles Roberts, as reported from the British Newspaper Archive (BNA), was fined 40 shillings for opening the beer house he ran before 1.00 on a Sunday. I knew he was based in Blackstock Road but didn’t know which pub. The Islington Gazette, which reported the case on Saturday 22 August 1863, stated that in fact, Charles ran the Kings Head at that time. *
The defendant, in paying the money, said he did not think it was right that the police should be allowed to go round his bedroom, and that without producing anything to show that they were police constables. If he had not admitted the police he would have been fined, and he did not think it was fair that the police should be sent round in plain clothes to entrap persons, and yet have nothing to show that they are officers.
Inspector Wiseman said the house was near the New River, and if men were sent in uniform it was impossible to catch the defendant.

In 1876 aged 19 Edward had deserted the Royal Engineers – presumably to marry a month later Sarah aka Louisa Rawlings. **
In 1898 they took over the Bricklayers Arms in Farningham, Kent, from descendants of the Sharp family who built it circa 1781.
In 1901 census, the Howeys were still at the Bricklayers Arms, although by 1911 the couple were living in Tottenham, London and Edward, 55, was a Beer House Keeper out of work. **
