Red Lion, 280 Borough High Street SE1

Southwark St George index

The earlier address is at 68 Blackman Street. At 280 Borough High Street by 1891 due to road renaming, renamed the Ruse in recent years ** The address is 84 Blackman Street in 1824 and earlier, prior to street renumbering. Rocque's map of 1746 shows an "Angel Inn" very near the corner with Great Suffolk Street (called Dirty Lane on that map), and there's a 1713 Surrey Quarter Sessions record mentioning footpath repairs for a lane between Gravel Street (now Great Suffolk St) and the "Angel Inn" on Blackman Street, which must have been the lane which later became Great Suffolk Street.

In John Lockies index to the plan of London, the Angel Inn is described as the "Angel Inn, Blackman street, Borough, at 80, about seventeen doors on the L. from the Kings bench". * Closed in 2015, and demolished 2016. *+

I think that this Joseph Taylor is my ancestor Joseph William Taylor b 1818 and married to Isabella Anne Gould Norman (b 1815). As always the proof that such a common first name is connected is an issue. However I think this is the pub depicted on your site.
There is an historical image/ engraving of a building on the corner of Great Suffolk Street (1838) in the Southwark local history centre a couple of blocks from the pub. as part of a picture of all the buildings on Blackman Road. in this image it has another storey. And I assume that the current one is a more recent building or that it lost a storey in the war or something. ***
